In this chapter, Carmelo Mesa-Lago and Christian Aspalter provide an important update on the welfare state system in Cuba, which in very recent years made through important changes and developments. The chapter continues the tradition set by Carmelo Mesa-Lago in the First Edition of this handbook, to follow closely and strongly empirical evidence, by looking at national statistics. This chapter, while focusing on economic and social policy insider knowledge, has added a bit more of a normative social policy perspective here and there. The myths about, and treasures of actual/factual knowledge about, the Cuban welfare state system are much greater than expected even by most social policy experts and scientists around the world. Any mainstream expert on social policy needs to read this fiercely contesting and fiercely updated chapter on the Cuban welfare state system as it is.
