Population geography describes, analyses, and reflects upon the organisation and growth of human populations in their environmental and social settings. This article explores how such scholarship formed a key component of an ascendant human geography in the 1960s and 1970s, and how it has been transformed by structural and cultural approaches more recently. The article goes on to review research on globalisation and migration, families and households, inequality and population, transnationalism, and life-course. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
