摘要 | In recent years, some scholars in Chinese studies in the United States have begun to took beyond those historical processes that had once been viewed as pivotal for twentieth-century China's modernization. In this review article, the authors examine four works representative of the pioneering effort to decenter the May Fourth Movement: David Der-wei Wang's Fin-de-Siècle Splendor. Lydia Liu's Translingual Practice, Leo Lee's Shanghai Modern, and Yeh Wenhsin's edited volume, Becoming Chinese. They analyze how the authors of these works move beyond existing scholarship's interpretation of the movement and its historical implications. In addition, they also compare U.S. and P.R.C. approaches to the decentering of the May Fourth Movement. The authors conclude by pointing out the weakness of the four American publications, contending that they cling to assumptions about the May Fourth Movement, Chinese modernity, or both that undercut their search for the multiplicity of the Chinese modern. |
