摘要 | Catherine Wheatley in Michael Haneke’s Cinema: The Ethic of the Image investigated how positioning the spectator in the films of Austrian director Michael Haneke works to create a viewing subject able to reflect upon the filmic text from an ethical perspective. Complementary to Wheatley’s thesis of the ethical spectator, and necessary to it, is Todd McGowan’s rethinking of the gaze and definition of ‘the spectator’ as a subject interpellated into the filmic text. Teresa Rizzo brings a Deleuzean approach, offering an embodied spectatorship that breaks the conventions of transcendence, identity and representation. This essay will synthesize these three thinkers to explore an ‘ethical spectatorship’ in Haneke’s film Caché. We propose that Haneke’s techniques destabilize the transcendent spectator as a means of opening to immanent recollection-images that evoke a sense of shared guilt leading towards the possibility of atonement. To this end, we focus on how Haneke applies narrative devices to both engage and challenge the spectator to take account of the past. We conclude that Caché offers temporal cinema that punctuates or ruptures conventional structure to allow the spectator to enter the film and engage in a personal process of ethical reflection. |
