Abstract

Richtmyer-Meshkov instability has been the subject of considerable controversy due to the seeming disagreement between the predicted growth rates from numerical simulation, mathematical models and experiment, even in the simplest case of two-dimensional rectangular geometry. Here we attempt to resolve this disagreement by bringing together three methods of determining growth rates experiment, simulation and theory-and applying them to the same problem under controlled conditions. We find substantial agreement between experiments, computation and mathematical models.
