Abstract

Among various approaches to foster the development of young people in the world, Positive Youth Development (PYD) is the comprehensive and evidence-based one in its implementation. In recent years, the Chinese government’s youth-related policy has started to show signs of resemblance to the approach of PYD that is popular in Europe and America. Therefore, this chapter looks to introduce this adolescent development approach with particular focus on its current utilization in China. It begins with introducing the application of PYD in both developed and developing countries, especially those related to policy initiatives in China. The chapter will go on to portray the theoretical roots and various major models of PYD. It will then illustrate the current development of PYD, at both academic and practical levels, in the regions of Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macao. The issues related to adapting the PYD approach across different regions of China with various sociocultural characteristics will be considered. The authors expect this chapter to provide intellectual support to policymakers in China, and those related professionals, like school teachers and social workers, and facilitate better utilizing PYD in different youth-related contexts. The chapter should also be useful for the international audience who are interested in PYD and facing a similar sociocultural context with Chinese societies.
