Abstract | Persistent state intervention and nascent market forces have featured prominently in China's publishing since the start of the economic reform. This hybrid state-andmarket system has had a profound impact on the industry's structure, and the competitive advantage of different publishers, and also led to some endemic problems in the industry. This impact is played out to different extent and in different ways in different sectors of the publishing business. As long as this hybrid structure persists, some endemic problems of the industry are likely to remain. |
