The Chinese government's "Chinese Culture Going Global" initiative heralds a reversal in the interest of translation studies in China, with the focus shifted from inward translation to outward translation. In an increasingly globalized cultural context, China's outward translation studies is an important attempt to rectify the imbalanced global translational flow, i.e., usually from English to "lesser" languages. Although an increasing number of Chinese translation scholars have dedicated themselves to the outward translation studies, a theoretical gap and a lack of methodological sophistication are still apparent in this research field. Many of the studies are modeled on similar research designs, adopting the same methods for data analysis and yielding similar conclusions. This paper argues that an interdisciplinary and eclectic approach is instrumental in probing the intricacies of the outward translation of Chinese literature. Informed by Edoardo Crisafulli's eclectic methodology and Theo Herman's three interconnected levels for translation studies, it draws on insights from different strands of translation studies to elaborate on each level, with the hope to advance the theoretical thinking on China's outward translation studies and contribute to broader and more durable understandings of translation as a cultural and social practice.
